International Trophy meeting 2010, Silverstone

HSCC logoThe International Trophy has a long history, first being presented back in the 1930's at the Brooklands circuit. It moved to Silverstone and was presented to the winner of a non-championship Formula 1 race between 1949 and 1978.  The list of winners includes Mike Hawthorn, Peter Collins, Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and James Hunt. As the Formula 1 races declined, the grid was filled with Formula 5000 cars, and then the increasing numbers of Grand Prix led to the finishing of non-championship races for Formula one, so the Trophy switched to a Formula 2 race for 7 years before formula 2 evolved into Formula 3000. This year the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) decided to celebrate this history, not with a single race but with the whole meeting being named the International Trophy. The Derek Bell Trophy race for Formula 5000 and Formula 2 features many cars which had previous competed for the International Trophy.

With 13 races scheduled over the two day meeting, variety was provided with races for single seaters, sports cars, touring cars and GT cars. Record entries saw the largest grid ever assembled for the Historic Formula Ford 2000 race with 40 cars taking the start. Neil Fowler proved to be the class of the field taking the win in his Lola T580

The event also saw the first round of the 2010 GT & Sports Car cup. With 4 races on the calendar for 2010, this series started at Silverstone, then will travel to Monza, return to the UK and Oulton Park before finishing in October at the Grand Prix Historique de Ledenon. The GT & Sports Car Cup is for pre-66 GT's and pre-63 Sports racing cars. The E-type Jaguar dominated the entry list, which also include all three Morgan Plus 4 SLR cars ever built. The race was a clean sweep of the podium places by the E-Type Jaguar, with Jon Minshaw and Martin Stretton taking Victory.

The Derek Bell Trophy race for Formula 5000 and Formula 2 cars was a non championship event, as a lot of the regular Formula 5000 cars were still returning from the winter Australian series. To offset this, there was a large entry of Formula 2 and Formula Atlantic cars. Simon Hadfield ran the recently restored Ex Bob Evans Championship winning Trojan T101 to an easy victory from Martin Stretton in a Formula 2 March 742
