VSCC See Red 2011
The Vintage Sports Car Clubs show piece event of
the year, See Red, took place at Donington Park over the weekend of
21st and 22nd of May 2011. As usual, the club
like to include something extra special in with their usual mix of
fantastic motorsport. This year there were two special events at
the meeting. One was a demonstration of the 24 litre Napier Railton
Land Speed Record car from the 1930s and the other was a Formula 3
500cc race, with one of the largest ever recent gatherings of these
special 500cc racing cars. Saturday included some races for
slightly more modern cars, including the Equipe GTS for classic
sports cars as well as the regular VSCC series for Pre-61 GT cars.
The two day program consisted of 17 races and included a couple of
important Trophies up to win - the Vintage Seaman Trophy and the
Historic Seaman Trophy.
The Formula 3 500cc race saw a large field of over twenty cars
take the start. One of the more unusual cars was the 1949 Trimax
Monoposto driven by Duncan Rabagliati. Styled to look like a small
pre-war Auto Union, the car proved a little fragile and
failed to complete the first lap. The race proved to be as
spectacular as it was noisy. The 500cc engines screamed as the cars
lapped Donington at an average speed of over 70mph. The race was
won by Richard Ellingworth in a 1954 Kieft F3, similar to the type
raced originally by Stirling Moss. He lead home a couple of
customer Coopers a Mk XI of Nigel Ashman in second, and a Mk 9 of
John Turner in 3rd place.
